I remember when we decided to make the move to Tulum, Mexico. It was somewhat scary, but very exciting. The nerve-wracking part is living in another country where we had no friends, leaving our family, kids and grandchildren. A rationalization may be where else better place to live where they can come and visit us. Everyone loves the Riviera Maya and wants to come here on vacation. This way, they all have a place to stay for free and they only have to purchase an airplane ticket and have spending money.
One thing that one of my friends said to me was, “How will you shop and where”? Her thought was, “there is probably no Home Depot, Walmart or big shopping malls”. “What kind of grocery stores are there”?
It’s funny how a lot of people think Mexico is not developed. I had to grin, because this is farthest from the truth. There is a Home Depot, Walmart and Sam’s Club in Playa del Carmen. A Costco, Home Depot and Walmart in Cancun. There are several shopping malls, movie theaters and grocery stores. The best part is they are, on the whole, less expensive than in the US.
The main grocery stores here are Chedraui, Super Aki, Soriana and Walmart. There are also many smaller grocery stores that have the necessities, but not as much as the bigger ones.
In Tulum, there is a Chedraui and Super Aki. Then many small stores throughout the town. The one thing I remember thinking when we first went to these stores is how cool it was that you could also buy anything you needed for your house. They also sell appliances and furniture, not just food. They are like one stop shopping if one can survive on less depth of choices.
We have learned a lot since living here, too. Trying to find certain things we used in the states. For instance. Baking soda. You would think it is on the baking isle. Nope. Not here. You will find it in the Pharmacy or on the cleaning isle by the air fresheners. There are also a lot of things kept in their special imports section. This is for the tourist that come looking for things that the stores do not usually carry, that is found in the grocery stores in the foreign countries.
Another place to shop in Playa del Carmen is Pacsa Deli. It is located about 4 blocks of the main highway on Av. Andres Quintana Roo on the jungle side. This place carries a lot of foods we are used to buying in the states and can’t find in the regular grocery stores. The meat and vegetables are frozen and caters mainly to the restaurant buyer.
Tulum’s main hardware stores are Boxito, pronounced (bow-shi-to) and Cocopesa. You will also find throughout the town small hardware stores that carry just the necessities of hardware.
Other than these stores, people must go to Playa del Carmen to do their shopping. Play del Carmen is about a 40-minute drive from Tulum.
Right when you come into Playa del Carmen there is the Hospiten Hospital, Office Max and Sam’s Club. Directly across the street is the Centro Maya Shopping Mall. There is a Soriana Grocery store inside. There are many shops and a movie theater. There is also a City Club. It is a lot like Sam’s Club. You must have a membership to shop there.
If you go just a little farther down the road, you take a right on Av. Aviacion and follow it all the way to the end and take a left onto Av. 10. There will be a few pay parking areas. Park in one of those and there is a big Mall there on the right side. Old Navy, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and many other popular department stores. This mall is right by the Ocean and Ferry Terminal to go over to Cozumel Island. One thing of great importance here for you that will be moving here full-time, the Immigration Office is at the corner of Av. Aviacion and Av 10, before you get to this mall.
Another nice shopping mall is Plaza Las Americas. This is a very big shopping mall. It has a huge movie theater and many shops. There is an underground parking garage here. It is also very close to a Walmart and Home Depot.
If you are needing to go to Costco, you must take the trip to Cancun. The Costco is not that hard to get to. It is off the main highway a little way. If you have a navigation phone app, it will get you to it easily. There is also a Mega Soriana Grocery Store next door. When you do shop at Costco, the parking machine gives you a ticket. You must remember to have your ticket validated at the checkout or you won’t be able to get out of the parking lot for free. We learned this the hard way. Had to go back in and get it validated.
And of course, there are many shopping malls in Cancun. They are located closer to the Hotel Zone. I will honestly say; I have not gone to the malls in Cancun. Only Playa del Carman.
I hope this was some helpful information for your next time to Tulum. Cheers!!!!
